Semi-trained or untrained personnel in the timber industry usually has no choice but to identify timber by its color, appearance or other specific features on the wood. An app called MyWood-Id was recently launched to change that.
Working with the macro lens on the smartphone, the user should be able to scan and capture the characteristic end surface every timber or group of timber possesses. That means a specific pattern of cells arranged in a way that exposes a specific recognizable pattern.
The software is currently equipped to identify a variety of over 20 local Malaysian timber groups and is expected to be updated to cover over a hundred local timber groups. If you have a device running with IOS 8.0 or later, check out the app store and try it yourself for free.
